The Scivias shawl is inspired by the dramatic illuminated scenes in Hildegard von Bingen’s text of the same name. The title Scivias comes from the Latin word for knowledge, and this project is designed to build your knowledge of the stacked stitch technique. The shawl begins with a floral center and grows into tiers of flaming chevrons. The border is the most complex section, densely filled with winding rows of color stripes

Most of the colorwork in this shawl is created with stacked stitches, keeping the piece light and without strands on the wrong side of the work. If you have never tried this technique before, It is recommended that you watch the following videos before casting on:

The center of the shawl is based on a pi shawl formula, the number of chevrons doubles in each tier as you approach the border. If you are familiar with the Fox Paws pattern, the border of this shawl takes the paw motif to another level. You’ll get to knit 3 sizes of paws, each with a different number of rows and stitches.

Finished Size: 90 x 42? (228 x 106.5 cm) half circle.

Yarn: Harrisville Designs flyWHEEL, 170 yards (155 meters) per 50g.
Color A: 4 skeins in Eastview (Gold accent color)
Color B: 2 skeins in Aquifer (Blue contrast color)
Color C: 4 skeins in Barn Door (Red main color)
Color D: 2 skeins in Mallard (Green contrast color)
Color E: 3 skeins in Farwell (Dark red harmonious with Color C)

Use the coloring page to pick the right color combo for your shawl. For a smaller shawl, I recommend Harrisville Designs Shetland yarn, a fingering weight alternative to the sport weight.

Needles: Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles with a 24? and 60? (60 cm and 150 cm) cord, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 20 sts x 40 rows = 4 x 4? (10 x 10 cm) square Garter stitch.
Other Materials: 40+ markers, sewing needle, pins, blocking wires (optional)

Skill Level: this pattern is best suited for adventurous knitters and those who have a knowledge of the stacked stitch technique. Videos of all unusual techniques are available on YouTube.
