This charming icord garland features tiny flower-shaped bobbles that add a touch of whimsy to any setting. The pattern is a lot of fun and looks cute, but it was originally developed as a fun way for anyone learning my new Flower Bobble technique to try it out in the context of a simple and fast project.
This downloadable pattern includes:
- Written instructions
- Step-by-step photo tutorials
- Linked video guide to master the Flower Bobble stitch.
- Tips on how to customize the stitch by adjusting petal count and petal size to suit your vision.
This technique is a new stitch, made from familiar components. You can read about it's creation in this blog post. The stitches can be used anywhere you would place a traditional bobble and combined with a variety of techniques. Try them out and practice with this garland, then try adding them to garter, stockinette, or any other basic textured stitch. They play nicely with brioche and cabled textures if you want to create more complex floral motifs.
These stitches also work well with assigned pooling to create a multi-color garland, simply work the icord until you get to your special color, then start the Flower Bobble instructions. Feisty Fibres has created a special Extended Pooling yarn with a specific amount of pop color for this technique and you can find it here. The flowers also work perfectly with many self-striping sock yarns but I haven't yet found one in my stash that's still in production.
If you feel unsure about your skill level and would like to try the Flower Bobble stitch, you can watch and follow this free tutorial on YouTube. Like most complex stitches, the instructions can take a few attempts to master, but the effect is worth the effort. The still images in this pattern are very helpful, but the video shows some of the more nuanced actions that are required to create these little flowers.
The seeds of knowledge are here for you, a flower bobble is waiting for you to plant, water and watch your knitting skills bloom. Whether you're a seasoned knitter looking to expand your textural toolkit or a beginner who wants to take on a challenge, this stitch offers endless possibilities for creativity and self-expression. Don't let complexity intimidate you-some of the most rewarding projects come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Start with the free i-cord garland pattern, use the video resources to get a feel for the stitch, then let your imagination run free. So pick up your needles, choose a yarn that makes you smile, and knit boldly. The flowers are waiting.
